Mindri Gorge
Sunday 21st June 2026
A hike filled with continuous views of the wild, authentic landscape of the Asterousia Mountains, ending beside the sea.
Mindri Gorge, on the eastern side of the Asterousia range, is a particularly beautiful hiking route that follows the riverbed through a rugged yet accessible landscape, with oleanders, carob trees, and small water crossings.
The route begins after the village of Pano Kastelliana and follows mainly old self-maintained trails, goat paths, and the open bed of the gorge alongside the Mindris River. Depending on the pace and dynamics of the group, those who wish may continue along the coastal trail to Agios Nikitas and back.
The route is mostly downhill, with gentle elevation changes, ending at Tsoutsouros and the Libyan Sea, where we enjoy a swim at its beautiful beach.
Along the way, we encounter oleanders, carob trees, and traces of ancient settlements dating back to the Minoan era, while near the exit of the gorge lie the remains of ancient Inatos and the Roman baths of the area.
The hike has no exposed sections or difficult passages; however, hiking boots and long trousers are recommended due to the poorly maintained trail and the rugged natural terrain of the region.
