Trekking on Mt Dikti

The Dikti mountain range is the southernmost mountain massif in Greece with peaks exceeding 2,000 meters in elevation. It forms a horseshoe around the Selakano Forest. Its name most likely derives from mythology and means the place where Zeus was born (Zeus + tikto = to give birth → Dikti).

The aim of this hike is to traverse and summit the three highest peaks of Mt Dikti, all above 2,000 meters. It is a long hike at relatively high elevations, with alternating ascents and descents and impressive landscapes throughout.

Our route starts at the Katharo Plateau (1,100m). We cross rough, pathless terrain to ascend Lazaros Peak (2,085 m). The next summit we reach is Spathi (2,148m), the highest peak of the Dikti range. After enjoying the views, we follow the trail to the location of Seli, from where we head towards Afentis Peak (2,141m), the second-highest peak of Mt Dikti.

Then we descend towards the Omalos Plateau of Viannos (1,300m) and finish in Kato Symi (770m).

Mountaineering experience and excellent physical fitness are essential for participation.
