Messonas Gorge

Sunday, April 6th, 2025

A spectacular, circular route with exceptional natural surroundings, historical settlements and wonderful views.

We set off from the village of Kavoussi, at 100m a.s.l., in Eastern Crete and follow an old upgoing trail on the eastern side of the gorge. We visit the ancient settlement of Azorias and then continue upwards following an old water pipe. Our highest point is the Thrypti Plateau at 950m. Then we return to Kavoussi hiking down an old stone-covered trail and passing by the oldest olive tree in the Mediterranean, 3250 years old.
