a. Trekking on Mt Orno
Sunday, 18th May 2025
The starting point of our mountain route is at the exit of the Havgas Gorge in Kavousi, eastern Crete.
We will follow an old path / cobbled trail that will lead us to the Avgou Plateau. From there, we will continue along the trail towards the village of Lastros. However, we will leave the trail at the location of Limnia (696m) and proceed through off-trail terrain. We will ascend to the summit of Spathi, which stands at 1,186 meters. From there, following the ridge, we will reach Askordalia — the highest peak of the Orno Mountains, with an elevation of 1,237 meters.
Continuing along the ridge to the east, we will arrive at the peak of Megali Moura (1,180m). The view along the entire ridge is stunning: to the south, we can see the Bebonas valley and the northern slopes of the Thrypti range, while to the north, the northern slopes of the Orno Mountains unfold, along with the villages at its foothills, the Cretan Sea, and — on a clear day — the islands of Kasos and Karpathos.
From Megali Moura, we will descend (through off-trail terrain) to the Limnes Plateau, which is at 847 m, and then enter the Kefalas Gorge. Walking along its riverbed, it will lead us to the end point of the hike (just outside the village of Exo Mouliana).
This hike is intended for mountaineers with excellent physical condition and experience in off-trail terrain.
