Gigilos – Volakias

Weekend April 30th – May 1st, 2022

A weekend in the White Mountains and ascent to the peaks of Gigilos (2080 m) and Volakias (2116 m) of the imposing rocky mountain above Samaria Gorge.

We set off on Saturday morning for Omalos Plateau, where we spend the night in rooms or tents. Shortly after our arrival, we start a circular route: from Xyloskalo (1200m) to the shelter Kallerghi and after resting and enjoying the unique view from the shelter, we move northwards and descend from a different path to the plateau of Omalos.

Early on Sunday morning, we start from Xyloskalo, at 1200m a.s.l. We follow the E4 European trail and pass by impressive rock formations, we have a short stop at the water spring of Linoseli, and then reach the saddle at 1650m enjoying the view. We continue on rocky terrain admiring the breathtaking view over the biggest part of western Crete until we reach the top of Gigilos, at 2080m. Then the peak of Volakias (2116m) is our next goal.

We follow the same route on our way down.
