Messonas Gorge

A spectacular, circular route that includes exceptional natural surroundings, historical settlements and wonderful views.

We set off from the village of Kavoussi, at 100m a.s.l., in Eastern Crete and we follow an old upgoing trail on the eastern side of the gorge. We visit the ancient settlement of Azorias and then we continue upwords following an old water pipe. Our highest point is the Thrypti Plateau at 950m. Then we return to Kavoussi hiking down an old stone-coverd trail and passing by the oldest olive tree in the Mediterranean, 3250 yers old.
