Agios Ioannis, Sfakia – Pacnes Peak

Saturday 4th – Sunday 5th October 2014

A weekend in the unique region of Sfakia in western Crete and ascent to the highest peak of the White Mountains.

We set off on Saturday morning to Sfakia and we may go for a swim at Iligas beach on the way. Later we come to the small village of Agios Ioannis, where we go hiking for three hours in a cypress and pine tree forest admiring the view to the Libyan Sea.

We spend the night either in rooms in Agios Ioannis and Anopolis or in tents.

Early on Sunday morning we set off. We use small trucks to reach a spot called Rousses, at 1900m a.s.l. From there we go up to Pachnes peak, at 2452m. On the way back we take the same route.

Only little mountaineering experience and the basic gear are required.
