Sitia

Saturday 5th-Sunday 6th-Ash Monday 7th March 2022

A three-day trip that includes hikes in the unique Natural Park of Sitia, in eastern Crete.

The hikes through earth’s features and monuments are an alternative way of tourism that includes wondering in nature, experiencing the monuments of geology, landscape, environment, history and culture of an area. All these can be found in abundance at the Sitia Nature Park.

Saturday 5th March 2022

Lastros

We set off from the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion at 09:00. On our way to the town of Sitia, we stop at Lastros village and hike in the area. It’s an easy and interesting hike in beautiful natural and cultural surroundings.

Hiking Hours: 5  •  Difficulty Rate: 1  •  Track length: 11 km 

Early in the evening we reach Sitia and settle down at Itanos Hotel.

 

Sunday 6th March 2022

Chiona Beach – Skinias Beach – Petsofas Hill

A circular hike starting from Chiona Beach near Palaikastron village. We pass by Skinias Beach, hike up Petsofas Hill, at 240m a.s.l., visit the archaeological site of Roussolakos and end back at Chiona.

Hiking Hours: 6  •  Difficulty Rate: 2  •  Track length: 12 km

In the evening there is dinner at the hotel with music in the Carnival spirit. Participation is optional.

 

Ash Monday 7th March 2022

Georoute No 15: Toplou Monastery Gorge

An easy hike starting from Toplou Monastery that offers impressive geomorphological features. The gorge is an important part of Sitia Natural Park.

Hiking Hours: 3  •  Difficulty Rate: 1  •  Track length: 6 km

After the end of the hike, the bus takes us to Itanos Beach where we celebrate the day, Ash Monday, by eating the traditional food that we have brought with us.

Later in the afternoon, we return to Heraklion.

*All participants have got to present a negative rapid test or a vaccination certificate and wear an FFP2 face mask on the bus.
