Geropotamos Ravines
Sunday, March 29th, 2026
In the wider area of the villages Margarites, Eleftherna, and Alfa, small streams carve through the land, forming beautiful ravines—small gorges—with rich vegetation and a stunning burst of Cretan nature. We will walk through parts of two such ravines, ascending and descending the gentle low hills that separate them.
We hike through the ravine below Margarites, the Margaritsano Gorge, and the ravine that stretches from the bridge of ancient Eleftherna to the village of Alfa. The route is approximately 10 km long, with most of it on dirt roads that allow us to enjoy the lush green landscape at a relaxed pace. The final section, from the bridge of Eleftherna to Alfa, follows a trail that is slightly more adventurous and interesting.
Stone-built terraces with green grass, abandoned orange trees, small groves of cypress trees dotted with cyclamen, fallen tree trunks and dry branches that we must duck under, and open wells with rusty mechanisms beside us will transport us to another era.
The route takes about 4 hours without stops. We walk it at a relaxed pace, making three stops. The last stop will be longer, so we can enjoy our picnic in a green meadow, as there are no facilities for coffee or food in Alfa.
