Vreiko and Apoloustres Caves – Pefki Gorge

We set off from Pefki village (4200m) in eastern Crete. Following a path and a dirt road we reach Vreiko Cave (5400m), which we can visit if we have our flashlight. It’s 30m deep and remains of a neolithic settlement have been found in it.
Then we follow a dirt road we reach and visit Apoloustres Cave (610m), which used to be a refuge in case of danger for the local people. We continueto the hill of Estavromenos (620m), with a small church on top and great view. We follow a path down to the village of Pefki (420m), where we have a stop for a cold refreshment.
Later we cross the Pefki Gorge, a green and full of beautiful rock formations small gorge. We end our day in Makrygialos with a swim in the sea.
