Eligia Gorge – Kapetaniana
This week our hike is scheduled on Saturday and not on Sunday due to the Euro-election. So, on Saturday, May 24th we are crossing the Eligia Gorge in the south of Crete by the village of Kapetaniana.
We start from Kapetaniana and after an hour walk on a dirt road and a path we enter the gorge and start our via ferrata route on the west bank of it. Our crossing takes about 4 hours and ends at the beach of Agios Ioannis and then we use 4WD vehicles to return to Kapetaniana, for a snack or coffee.
This via ferrata crossing is the first one in Greece, completed in 2013.
The gorge is very beautiful, with colourful rock formations.
