The Shepherd’s Trail

Sunday 15th November 2026

Following the old shepherds’ trails through ever-changing landscapes, enjoying spectacular views, a cave used by revolutionaries, and a challenging mountain path.

We set off from the iconic village of Asi Gonia in Apokoronas, the birthplace of military leaders and writers, most notably Giorgos Psychoundakis, known as the “Cretan Runner” for his role as a messenger during the resistance.

We pass a small seasonal lake nestled in a plane tree forest, then continue through the Havidi Poros area and past the picturesque church of Agios Ioannis, before reaching the chapel of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros).

We then cross a wooded gorge, following the river that runs through it, as the trail leads us back to Asi Gonia.
