Epitaph Procession of the Mountaineers

Good Friday 10th April 2026

On this easy hiking route at the Limnakaro Plateau in Lasithi, we combine blooming spring nature with the traditional decoration and procession of the Epitaph (Epitaphios), part of the rituals of the Greek-Orthodox Easter.

We start from the village of Avrakontes on the Lasithi Plateau and ascend towards the Limnakaro Plateau, where we take part—together with many locals from the wider area, as well as fellow mountaineers—in the decoration of the Epitaph at the chapel of the Holy Spirit (Agio Pnevma).

The route is easy and suitable for beginner hikers and children.
