Omalos of Viannos – Afentis Peak
Saturday 24 – Sunday 25 January 2026
On Saturday morning, we depart from Heraklion heading to the Omalos Plateau of Viannos (1,300m). Overnight stay is at the Amygdalianos Mitato, either inside the shelter or in tents for those who prefer.
The following day, starting from the Omalos Plateau, we begin our hike up to Afentis Peak (2,141m). The ascent will take place off-trail, on loose and steep terrain.
Like the White Mountains and Psiloritis, Dikti (the Lasithi Mountains) was considered Free Greece during the period of the German occupation. In this area operated the resistance group of Adamantios Krasanakis (Krasanadamis), which later joined the resistance group of Manolis Bandouvas, active in southern Heraklion. The wider area of Afentis served as a partisan headquarters.
The summit of Afentis is a four-municipality boundary point, as it lies at the meeting point of the municipalities of Minoa Pediada, Viannos, Lasithi Plateau, and Ierapetra.
For the ascent to the summit, full winter mountaineering equipment, excellent knowledge of its use, good physical condition, and experience in winter ascents are required.
Payment must be made to the EOS Heraklion IBAN accounts, and participants must inform the Club by emailing the payment receipt.
IMPORTANT: Any bank transfer fees are borne by the participant (OUR).
