Gournes – Gournes Gorge – Kainourgio Chorio

Sunday 11th January 2026

The starting point of our route is the village of Gournes Pediados. We enter the Agia Anastasia Gorge and visit the cave-like church of the same name. It is a very beautiful and open V-shaped gorge, with low vegetation, and keen observers can spot fossilized seashells. Shortly before the end of the gorge, high on the right slope, there is a cross marking the place where monks were executed by the Germans.

At this time of year, there are water pools in the gorge bed; we bypass them by walking along the sides of the gorge and on a dirt road.

Our route ends at Kainourgio Chorio, where there will be a guided tour and refreshments offered by the local cultural association.

Payment should be made to the IBAN accounts of the Heraklion Mountaineering Club (EOS Herakleiou), and the Club should be notified by email by sending the proof of deposit.
