43rd Pan-Cretan Mountaineering Event – Lasithi

Leader: The Club’s Board • Hiking time: 2 + 6 hours • Difficulty level: 2

Every year, mountaineers from all Mountaineering Clubs of Crete gather to hike together and get to know one another better. This year, the event is organized by EOS Lasithi and hosted at the Strovili Mountain Shelter. The event includes overnight camping in tents, food, celebration, and a hike to a nearby peak.


Sunday 7th

Introduction to Rock Climbing

Leaders: Valia Andreadaki – Thomas Viskadourakis

An opportunity for both experienced and new climbers to enjoy a unique outdoor experience, discover an exciting sport, and perhaps even go on to become successful athletes and participate in competitions. At the climbing site of Voulismeno Aloni, and under the guidance of certified rock climbing coaches and EOS Heraklion members, Thomas Viskadourakis and Valia Andreadaki, everyone is welcome to get a first hands-on experience with rock climbing. The gear is provided by the Mountaineering Club.


Sunday 14th

a. Dories – Louma – Plaka

Leader: Giannis Antonakis  •  Hiking duration:7 hours  •  Difficulty level: 2

Our hike begins at the village of Dories (470m). We then visit the monasteries of Kardamoutsa (530m) and Aretiou (500m), explore the abandoned settlement of Chondrovolakes (460m), pass through Kato Louma (360m), and finish in Plaka. Most of the route follows trails and ends with a view of Spinalonga.

b. Kavousi Gorge

Leader: Valia Andreadaki  •  Hiking time: 6 hours  •  Difficulty level: 2+

Canyoning for those who have completed the relevant training with EOS Heraklion. The gorge is a natural sculpture—short in length, impressively narrow, with solid limestone deposits in ruby hues that change depending on the time of day. Meanders and vaulted overhangs offer beauty year-round. Dry and cool at this time of year.

Saturday 20th – Sunday 21st

Voriziano Gorge – Psiloritis

Leader: Manolis Fragkiadakis  •  Hiking time: 6 + 7 hours  •  Difficulty level: 4 + 3

From Vorizia village (540m), we ascend through the Voriziano Gorge, reaching Koutsounares and Akollita, where we camp overnight. The next day, we climb to the summit of Mount Ida (Timios Stavros, 2456m), descend to Skaro Nero, and follow a trail to the village of Kamares (586m).


Sunday 21st

Paximadia Islets

Leader: Paximadia Islets  •  Hiking duration: 1 hour  •  Difficulty level: 1

From Kokkinos Pyrgos, we take a boat to the Paximadia islets. On one of the two islands, we enjoy a short hike to the top and then move to a beach for swimming and food. Finally, we sail around both islets before returning to Kokkinos Pyrgos.


Sunday 28th

Prasses – Askidiano Gorge

Leader: Christoforos Cheladakis  •  Hiking duration: 5 hours  •  Difficulty level: 1

From the village of Prasses, Chania (520m), we begin our circular hike through the villages of Eastern Selino, Chania. We first descend into the Askidiano Gorge and then ascend to the village of Platani. There we encounter the old Stratolate trail, also known as the Royal Route, which once connected Chania with the province of Selino. We continue to Agkavanes, where we find the abandoned village of Askidia (480m). Following a path through a forest of chestnut and plane trees, we return to Prasses.
