Samaria Gorge
Saturday 22nd – Monday 24th June 2024
Every year, the Mountaineering Club of Heraklion organises the crossing of the famous Samaria Gorge.
We set off early on Saturday morning to Omalos Plateau, Chania. We enter the gorge at Xyloskalo, at 1250m a.s.l. On our way, we pass by the old village of St Maria and Portes, the narrowest point of the gorge and we end in Agia Roumeli, where we spend the night in rooms or tents.
Sunday is free for relaxing and swimming or short hikes around, like the Turkish fortification above Agia Roumeli or the beach of Agios Pavlos.
On Monday there is an optional hike along the E4 trail eastwards to the picturesque village of Loutro. On the way we stop at the beach of Agiow Pavlos, the beach of Marmara, where we can swim or have something to eat, and the beach of Finikas. We reach Loutro in the afternoon and take the boat to Chora Sfakion.
Those who do not wish to hike on Monday can stay in Agia Roumeli to enjoy the sea and take the boat to Chora Sfakion in the afternoon.
From Chora Sfakion the bus takes us back to Heraklion.
ATTENTION: The Club does NOT book any rooms in Agia Roumeli. Rooms have to be booked by the participants themselves.
