b. Vrouchas – Aforesmenos – Wind-energy Park

Sunday 13th February 2022

We start our hike from the village of Vrouchas Merabellou (200m) and hike along a rural road and a path towards the northern coastline of Merabello, to the ruined village of Myronikitas.

Then we walk among barren and abandoned fields, down to the rocky coast. Walking along a dirt road and along a rocky path overlooking the endless blue, we reach the cape of Aghios Ioannis and the historic Lighthouse of the Aforesmenos (meaning excommunicated). Strong winds almost always blow at the cape and the waves hit the rocks mercilessly, but that is not the reason why it was named Aforesmenos; more information about the history of the lighthouse will be given along the way.

Weather permitting, we make a short stop at the lighthouse and continue following a narrow path on the east above the beach of Chomatistra. From there we can see the wind generators, which stand on the ridge mismatching the dry landscape. Then we are led to the Wind-energy Park and the chapel of Aghios Ioannis (240m) after an uphill course of 1.5 km. The landscape is particularly wild, windswept and barren. The only thing that can grow here are the wind generators to produce the so-called green energy. We cross the Wind- energy Park and end back in Vrouhas, where we have time for a visit to the village.

The track length is 12 km, at an altitude difference of 250m.

*All participants have got to present a negative rapid test or a vaccination certificate and wear an FFP2 face mask on the bus.
