Koritsi – Vromonero

An easy hike, suitable for beginners and children accompanied by their parents.

Our hike starts 2 km away from the chapel of Agia Marina, at 1300m a.s.l., on the way from Anogia to Nida Plateau. We go up to Koritsi Plateau and St Aristidis Chapel following a dirt road. Then hiking on a trail we go down to Vromonero forest. Finally, a dirt road leads us to Agia Irini Monastery near Krousonas village, at 650m.

Vromonero comes from an ancient Greek word which means strong (“vrimon”) and sacred (“ieron”). According to a legend, the goddess Demeter met Jason on the hillside of Mount Ida, and Pluto, the god of the underworld, was the fruit of their love…

The trees in the woods are typical for the area of Mt Psiloritis. The particularity of the anaglyph and the rocks of Psiloritis have not been an obstacle to the growth of vegetation. However, they formed special edaphic, microclimatic, environmental conditions that allowed various species to create distinct forms and characteristics that reflect the distinctiveness of the mountain. The flora consists of many flowers, low bushes and trees, like Prinos (Quercus coccifera).
